We escape the bustle of Kyoto by support van and start our ride by crossing the majestic Lake Biwa Bridge. From the top of the bridge, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Japan's largest lake. After crossing, we follow the scenic lakeside road to Omi Hachiman. For lunch, we savor Omi Beef (one of Japan's top 3 Wagyu brands) in a historic town famous for its canals. Our destination is Nagahama, a nostalgic castle town. We explore the "Kurokabe Square" and the "Hikiyama Museum" before checking into a renovated Machiya (traditional townhouse) inn located right in the heart of the old district.
We transfer by support van to Seki, a city world-renowned for its blades. We visit the Traditional Swordsmith Museum and the Seki Cutlery Hall to witness the soul of the Samurai spirit and craftsmanship. From there, we cycle along the Nagara River, celebrated as one of Japan's three clearest rivers. The ride upstream towards the mountains offers refreshing scenery of emerald waters and lush green valleys. We arrive in Gujo Hachiman, famous for its pristine waterways and traditional summer dance festival. If you have energy left, we can take a short climb up to Gujo Hachiman Castle for a stunning view overlooking the town. We stay in a traditional Ryokan.
Today we ride the "Seseragi Kaido" (Stream Road), often voted as the best driving road for touring in Japan. Shaded by deep forests and following a gentle mountain stream, this road is a cyclist’s paradise with fresh air and almost no traffic signals. While the route includes a 1,200m elevation gain, our premium E-Bikes make the climb feel like a breeze. Our goal is Takayama, a beautifully preserved Edo-period town in the heart of the Alps. We stay in a Machiya hotel right in the old town.
This is the climax of the alpine adventure. We transfer by van to the gateway of the Norikura Skyline. This legendary road is closed to private cars—only bicycles, buses, and taxis are allowed. We ascend to the highest point of any public road in Japan (2,716m). Above the clouds, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Northern Japan Alps. After conquering the peak, we enjoy a thrilling, long downhill ride into the Norikura Highlands. We end the day soothing our muscles in the milky white sulfur hot springs of Oyado Kodama.
We begin the day with a scenic 55-minute cruise across Ise Bay by ferry, landing on the tip of the Atsumi Peninsula.
We transfer by support van to Tenkachaya, a famous teahouse offering a picture-perfect view of Mt. Fuji framing Lake Kawaguchi.

Day1 (Nagahama) : Historical Machiya Stay
Located in the heart of the nostalgic castle town of Nagahama, we stay in a renovated Machiya (traditional merchant townhouse). These accommodations perfectly blend the architectural beauty of the Edo and Meiji periods with modern luxury comfort. You can relax in a private space that feels like living in a museum.
Day2 (Gujo Hachiman) : Sekisuien or equivalent Ryokan
Located right at the foot of Gujo Hachiman Castle, we stay at the city’s premier accommodation. After a refreshing ride along the river, relax in the open-air bath surrounded by a Japanese garden.
Day3 (Takayma) : Honjin Hiranoya or equivalent Ryokan
Located in the very heart of Takayama, just steps away from the historic Jinya and the iconic Red Bridge. We select a premier Ryokan renowned for its impeccable Japanese hospitality (Omotenashi). After exploring the preserved streets, unwind in the Onsen (Hot Spring) facilities to soothe your muscles. Dinner is a culinary masterpiece, featuring exquisite seasonal dishes and, of course, premium Hida Beef.
Day4 (Norikura) : Oyado Kodama
After conquering the highest road in Japan, your reward is the Milky White Sulfur Onsen (Hot Spring). Located in the cool highlands of Norikura, this mountain lodge offers authentic “Nigori-yu” waters that are renowned for soothing tired muscles. Enjoy the starry sky and the cool mountain breeze in this alpine sanctuary.
Day5 (Narai) : Iseya or Echigoya
A truly rare experience: staying inside a designated Important Preservation District. We stay at a historic inn (Hatago) that has welcomed travelers for over 200 years on the Nakasendo Trail. The building remains as it was in the Edo period, offering a genuine “time-travel” experience that modern hotels cannot provide.
Day6 (Fuji) : Highland Resort Hotel & Spa
For the final night, we select a hotel that offers the most majestic, obstruction-free views of Mt. Fuji. Located conveniently next to Fujisan Station, guests have exclusive access to “Fujiyama Onsen,” a massive traditional wooden bathhouse featuring Japan’s largest pure timber bathroom. It is the perfect place to soak your tired muscles and reflect on the epic journey before returning to Tokyo.
Powered by SHIMANO: World-Leading Japanese Engineering We deliberately chose E-Bikes equipped with drive units from SHIMANO, Japan’s own world-leading bicycle component manufacturer. Known for their whisper-quiet operation and incredibly smooth assist, these Japanese-engineered motors provide a natural riding feel that perfectly complements the serene landscapes of the Samurai Alps Route. Reliability is paramount on a long journey, and with Shimano, you are in the safest hands.
Our primary model is the KONA El Kahuna (or equivalent). This versatile bike is designed to handle every terrain on the Shogun Trail—from smooth tarmac to historic cobblestone paths and sandy coastal roads. Its robust tires and front suspension ensure a stable, comfortable ride, absorbing bumps while providing excellent traction.
For riders who prefer a more relaxed, upright posture, we offer the MERIDA eSPRESSO. This “step-through” model allows for easy mounting and dismounting without lifting your leg high. It is perfect for long-distance cruising while enjoying the scenery with minimal strain on your back and shoulders.
The Best Fit in Japan We are proud to be the only tour operator in Japan fully stocked with a wide range of frame sizes from XS to L. Whether you are petite or a tall rider with a Western physique, we guarantee a bike that fits you perfectly for a safe and comfortable journey.
Our support van travels with you every step of the way, fully stocked with water and snacks. It is specially equipped to transport both you and your bike simultaneously, giving you total flexibility. This ensures you can customize your ride on the fly. If you encounter rain or feel tired, we can easily shorten the route or switch to a walking tour or cultural experience instead. On steep climbs, it is quite common for guests to relax in the comfort of the van and cheer on their partners who want to tackle the challenge. You can ride as much—or as little—as you wish.
I will be the primary guide for this tour. I will respect your privacy while supporting you in enjoying a unique part of Japanese history and cycling to the fullest.
I learned English when I was an officer in the military. My hobbies are traveling abroad and cycling, with Belgium, the Dolomiti, and Tuscany being particularly memorable!
