The San’in Road, which connects Kyoto to the Sea of Japan, is one of the oldest roads that people have used since ancient times, and a cycling route that allows you to enjoy the most quintessentially Japanese beauty.
Many of the roads are lightly traveled, and many ancient settlements and natural wonders remain. The Tango Peninsula, which is your finish line, boasts stunning scenery that has been described as “Japan’s most beautiful coastline.”
Along the way, you can enjoy the mystical cedar forests, majestic rivers, and terraced rice fields in the Tamba Highlands.
While the route is slightly hilly, if you’re on an e-bike, it will be the perfect challenge for intermediate cyclists.

Route: Kyoto City – Arashiyama – Mt. Atago – Miyama
Your journey begins with a private pick-up from Kyoto Station or your hotel. After a professional bike fitting at our shop, we start our ride from the iconic Arashiyama district.
Leaving the city bustle behind, we ride into the mystical cedar forests of Mt. Atago. The route winds through majestic valleys and along the Katsura River, leading us deep into the mountains. Our destination is Miyama, a remote village famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses.
Accommodation: The Thatched Heritage Tonight, you will stay in a traditional thatched-roof inn. While the exterior preserves centuries of history, the interior has been fully renovated to offer modern luxury and comfort. Enjoy a rustic feast featuring local chicken and fresh mountain vegetables.
Route: Miyama – Yura River – Ayabe City
Today’s ride is a relaxing journey following the flow of the Yura River. Compared to Day 1, the route is relatively flat and shorter, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely cruise through the countryside.
As we descend from the mountains, the valley opens up into the Ayabe basin. This area is famous for its high-quality green tea and its history as a center of the silk industry. Enjoy the peaceful views of tea plantations and historic streetscapes.
Accommodation: Traditional Farm Stay Tonight, we stay at a “Minshuku,” a guesthouse run by a local farming family. Dinner is the ultimate farm-to-table experience. You will be served vegetables harvested from the farm that very same day. Simple, fresh, and incredibly flavorful—it is a culinary experience that rivals any Michelin-starred restaurant. Depending on the season and arrival time, guests may also participate in harvesting vegetables.
Route: Ayabe – Yura River – Mt. Ooe (Optional) – Miyazu
Today, we follow the river to the Sea of Japan. You have two route options depending on how active you feel:
Coastal Cruise (Standard): A mostly flat, scenic ride along the river and coastline. Perfect for enjoying the ocean breeze.
The “Ogre Mountain” Challenge: For those wanting a workout, we tackle Mt. Ooe. Legend says terrifying ogres (Oni) once lived here. It is a mystical, demanding climb, but the view of the ocean from the pass is absolutely breathtaking.
Accommodation: Historic Ryokan Experience We stay in a classic Japanese inn (Ryokan) with natural hot springs (Onsen). The historic wooden architecture is fascinatingly complex—like a maze—featuring hidden tea rooms and beautiful inner gardens. The landlady (Okami) will welcome you and teach you how to wear a “Yukata” (casual kimono). This hospitality is a true immersion into traditional Japanese culture.
Route: Amanohashidate – Manai Shrine – Nariai-ji Temple – Taiza
Today, we cycle across the “Bridge to Heaven.” Amanohashidate is not just a scenic sandbar; it is a sacred site in Shinto mythology. Legend says it was once a ladder used by the Sun Goddess Amaterasu to travel between heaven and earth. We will ride across this fallen ladder and visit Manai Shrine, the very spot where the goddess is said to have first descended to earth.
Next, we head to Nariai-ji Temple, a historic Buddhist pilgrimage site overlooking the bay. The Challenge: The road to the temple is an incredibly steep hill climb, known locally as a test of spirit and strength.
For Challengers: Conquer the steep ascent and earn your view!
For Relaxed Riders: Hop in our support car and skip the struggle. From the temple grounds, you will see what is considered the most beautiful view of Amanohashidate in all of Japan.
Destination: Taiza – The Sanctuary of Silence We end our ride in Taiza, a secluded fishing village on the tip of the Tango Peninsula. This area is dotted with ancient burial mounds (Kofun) over 1,500 years old. Tonight, experience traditional Japanese luxury: soaking in a hot spring with an ocean view and feasting on the freshest seafood caught right off the coast.
Route: Taiza – San’in Kaigan Geopark – Ine
For the grand finale, we cycle along what is often called “the most beautiful coastline in Japan.” This route through the San’in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark features a rugged Rias coastline that offers dramatic scenery at every turn. You will ride past towering geological formations like Tateiwa (Standing Rock) and Byobuiwa (Folding Screen Rock). With 8 distinct beaches and crystal-clear waters packed into this 40 km ride, the landscape completely transforms every 5 km, keeping you mesmerized until the very end.
Destination: Ine – The Boat House Village Our journey concludes in Ine, a fishing village unique in the world. Here, over 230 wooden boat houses (Funaya) line the bay, built right on the water’s edge. It is a breathtaking scene where life and the sea are inseparable. A Personal Note: This beautiful village is also my home. It is my pleasure to welcome you to my hometown as the final stop of our tour.
Transfer Service: After the tour, we provide a car transfer to either Amanohashidate or Kyoto City, depending on your next travel plans.
