Itinerary

Day1 Ancient Tea Fields & Sacred Deer (40km, 700m up)

Your journey begins with a private pickup at your hotel or Kyoto Station. We will transfer by car to the outskirts of Kyoto to begin our E-Bike adventure along the scenic banks of the Uji River.

We will cycle through lush landscapes to Wazuka, a hidden gem known as “Teatopia”. With an 800-year history of tea cultivation, Wazuka offers breathtaking views of beautifully manicured tea plantations carved into the mountainsides. After riding through these emerald green fields, we will pause to savor authentic Matcha green tea and delicious local sweets.

From there, we follow the historic Old Yamato Kaido Road toward the ancient capital of Nara. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by Nara’s famous sacred deer, revered as divine messengers for over 1,000 years. We will venture into their sanctuary, the mystical Kasugayama Primeval Forest, exploring the untouched nature where these gentle creatures live.

Our final destination is the traditional “Nara-machi” old town district. You will stay at either “Hotel Tenpyo Naramachi” or a classic “Nara Ryokan,” resting in the heart of Japanese history.

Activity Details : 40km (25miles), 700m (2,300ft)

Day 2: The Spirit of Wood and Steel – From Nara’s Ancient Hills to Osaka Bay (35km)

Transfer & Culture We begin with a seamless private transfer from your Nara hotel, bypassing city traffic to head directly into the tranquil Ikaruga district.

Here stands Horyu-ji Temple, Japan’s very first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded over 1,300 years ago, it is the world’s oldest existing wooden structure. You will enjoy a private walking tour through these sacred grounds, admiring the architectural resilience and the serene beauty that has survived centuries of history.

Cycling: Horyu-ji to Osaka Bay Leaving the temple, we mount our bikes for a scenic journey that traces the flow of water and time. We begin on the Tatsuta Kodo, an ancient road that once connected the imperial capital to the sea.

From there, we join the Yamato River Cycle Line. This dedicated cycling path offers a stress-free ride, allowing you to focus entirely on the changing landscape. You will witness a fascinating gradient of scenery—starting in the lush mountains of Nara, winding through the suburbs, and gradually opening up to the urban skyline as we approach the sea.

🚢 Overnight: The “Moving Hotel” Experience

Accommodation: Orange Ferry (Royal Suite) Forget the typical image of a ferry crossing. We have reserved the Royal Suite, the finest cabin on board.

  • Private Sanctuary: Often called a “moving hotel,” your spacious private room features comfortable twin beds, a living area, and a private en-suite bathroom with a bathtub.

  • Seamless Comfort: The Seto Inland Sea is incredibly calm, ensuring a smooth ride. Enjoy the privacy and amenities of a luxury hotel room while you sleep, waking up fresh and ready at the gateway to the cycling paradise.

Activity Details : 35km (20miles), 150m (490ft)

Day 3: Sky Cycling over the Inland Sea & An Architect of Silence (45km, 300m up)

Imabari Port to Sunrise Itoyama We arrive at Imabari Port in the early morning, refreshed by the sea breeze. After a relaxing breakfast on board, a private transfer awaits to take us to Sunrise Itoyama, the official gateway to the Shimanami Kaido.

The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge & Island Hopping Our ride begins with the absolute icon of the route: the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.

  • The Experience: Spanning over 4km (2.5 miles), this suspension bridge allows you to cycle nearly 100 meters above the swirling whirlpools of the sea. It is an exhilarating “sky cycling” on two wheels, offering the most photogenic panoramas of the entire trip.

  • The Route: We will cross three distinct islands, enjoying the gentle sea breeze and the lush citrus groves that characterize this region.

♨️ Late Afternoon: A Sanctuary in Setoda

Check-in: yubune (Azumi Setoda Annex) Our destination is Ikuchijima, an island known for its lemons and art. We check into yubune, a chic ryokan located in the historic port town.

  • The Design: This property (along with the main Azumi Setoda across the street) was developed by Adrian Zecha, the legendary founder of Aman Resorts.

  • The Vibe: Housed in a renovated traditional building, yubune reimagines the Japanese bathhouse culture with modern sophistication. It is a space designed for deep relaxation after a ride.

Dinner: Island Bounty or Classic French

For dinner, we will guide you to a select restaurant just a short stroll from the hotel. You have two exquisite options based on your preference:

  • Local Delicacies: Indulge in the fresh treasures of the Seto Inland Sea. This region is famous for its fluffy conger eel (anago) and rich, creamy oysters.

  • Western Option: For those desiring a break from Japanese cuisine, we can arrange a table at a charming French restaurant nearby, where local ingredients are transformed into classic European dishes.

Activity Details : 35km (20miles), 150m (490ft)

Day 4: The Ultimate Freedom – Your Perfect Finale in Paradise

The Shimanami Kaido is a cycling paradise with infinite possibilities. For your final day, we offer a “menu” of routes. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or a classic finish, the choice is yours.

🚙 Full Support Service: Regardless of which option you choose, our support car is at your disposal all day. We will transport your luggage and can pick up you and your bike at any point, ensuring total freedom and peace of mind.

🌟 Curator’s Choice: The “Sea, Stone & Sanctuary” Route

This is our most highly recommended itinerary, blending a hidden viewpoint, wildlife interaction, and a seamless departure.

  1. The Climb: We head to Omishima Island to conquer the route to Eboshi-iwa.

    • Climbing up to this unique rock formation offers a reward like no other: a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the islands and the sea from high above. It is a spiritual and scenic high point.

  2. The Sanctuary: From the northern port, we take a short ferry ride to Okunoshima, famous globally as “Rabbit Island.”

    • We will spend about an hour here, walking among hundreds of wild, friendly rabbits that roam freely. It is a surreal and heartwarming experience.

  3. The Departure: Another ferry takes us directly to Mihara Port.

    • Conveniently, the port is right next to Mihara Shinkansen Station. From here, you can seamlessly board a bullet train to Hiroshima or return to Osaka/Tokyo.

🛣️ Option A: The Classic Route (To Onomichi)

For those who wish to complete the full Shimanami Kaido crossing.

  • The Ride: Ride the remaining 30 km from your hotel to the mainland city of Onomichi.

  • The Vibe: Finish in a charming retro port town famous for its hillside temples and old-world atmosphere.

⚓ Option B: The Challenger’s Route (Tobishima Kaido)

For strong cyclists seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

  • The Ride: Head west onto the Tobishima Kaido, a chain of islands connected by bridges leading towards Kure.

  • The Vibe: A quieter, more rugged route rich in naval history and untouched island landscapes.

🏨 Option C: The Deep Dive (Stay Another Night)

For those who have fallen in love with the rhythm of the islands.

  • The Plan: Extend your stay at yubune / Azumi Setoda. Use the day to explore the hidden alleys of Setoda, visit local lemon farms, or simply relax. There is no need to rush; the islands have much more to reveal.
