Kyoto to Ine (160km/4days)
This is a 4day model plan where you rent a bicycle in Kyoto and return it in Ine. Of course, you can customize it as you like.
Route MAP
Day1 Kyoto to Kameoka(21km) *or to Kyo-tamba(45km)
Overview ~city & gorge~
I recommend going from Kyoto to Kameoka on the first day. Many cyclists may find 21km too short, but there are many sights to see in Arashiyama along the way, and crossing Hozukyo is difficult. Above all, it's the first day, so I think this is enough time to get used to the bike.
If you're mainly cycling, you might want to go another 20km to Kyo-tamba.
Rent Bikes from our shop
Our shop has all kinds of equipment for long distance cycling, from road bikes to touring e-bikes, chargers and pannier bags.
We also have detailed route maps and can show you recommended routes.
Equipment for long trips
There are various types of equipment for long trips, but the most important thing is a key to remove the battery and a charger. With these, you can charge it in the hotel, so you can go to any hotel. By the way, most hotels in the north allow you to charge it at the outdoor outlet.
The shop is located in Nishinoin, on the west side of Kyoto, a 10-minute walk from Nishinoin Station or Tanbaguchi Station.
AM: Along the Katsura River Cycling Road to Arashiyama
The most beautiful natural area in Kyoto is Arashiyama, famous for its bamboo forest. Arashiyama is on the western edge of Kyoto.
You can get there from our shop in 30 minutes by E-Bike via the Katsuragawa Cycling Road.
However, there are many things to see in Arashiyama, so you can easily enjoy it for 2 hours. It is a good idea to have a light lunch at a teahouse or outdoor stall.
PM: Crossing Hozukyo Gorge to Kameoka
Between Arashiyama and the Kameoka Basin to the west, there is a steep but beautiful mountain pass about 10 km long. Hozukyo is famous for its boat tours and trolley tours.
Although not known to the general public, there are two back roads that go through Hozukyo Gorge. Both offer an extremely exciting cycling experience, and can be completed in 30 minutes on an e-bike.
For detailed routes, check the paper map at the shop, Google My Maps, or Strava.
Stay in Kameoka
Kameoka is a commuter town for Kyoto, and hotels are cheap and easy to get. There are also many restaurants in the area.
Kameoka is a popular place for Kyoto residents to eat yakiniku, and all the yakiniku restaurants are delicious and cheap.
Day2 Kameoka~ Ayabe (62km)
Overview ~river, river, river!~
From Kameoka to Ayabe, you can enjoy the flat and beautiful rivers.
Yura & Hozu River
The route runs along the Hozu River and Yura River, a logistics route that has connected Kyoto with the Sea of Japan for over 1,000 years.
Recommended lunch spots
There aren't many lunch spots in this area, so it's best to check in advance. I recommend Nagomi Roadside Station.
You can eat locally produced soba and chicken dishes while looking out at the river. It's closed on Tuesdays, so a restaurant in front of the nearby station would be fine.
Accommodation in Ayabe①
Ayabe is a city of 30,000 people whose main industries are textiles and agriculture.
In front of the station there is a business hotel and restaurant catering to the factory businesses, and you can stay there cheaply.
Accommodation in Ayabe②~Farm Stay
In fact, Ayabe is also the number one farm stay area in the Kansai region. You can stay in over 20 farmhouses, and they will treat you to the best locally grown vegetables and cuisine.
However, it is difficult to make a reservation, so it is best to ask us or inquire online at the local tourist association(Visit Ayabe).
Day3 Ayabe to Amanohashidate (54km)
Overview ~beautiful sea & rice farm
Between Ayabe and Amanohashidate, there is a steep mountain called Mt. Oe. Various roads have been developed there since 1,500 years ago, but they are largely divided into routes that go through the mountain and routes that go along the river and the sea.
Mt.Oe route
Oeyama is the birthplace of Japanese demon legends and is a steep mountain. Even an E-Bike can be tiring. But the tiredness can be offset by the beautiful scenery and the opportunity to enjoy historical sites.
Seaside route
The road along the coast is flat and beautiful, but there is a lot of traffic and the roads are narrow, so if you go, try to avoid rush hour.
Recommended lunch spots
This is a fairly sparsely populated area, so be careful where you eat. The town of Oe was a tourist destination back when Mount Oe was popular, so there are plenty of high-quality lunch spots and supermarkets.
My personal favorite is the Oni Soba at Oe Shokudo.
Amanohashidate
It is a 3km long sandbar that has been known as one of the "Three Views of Japan" for 300 years. You can cross it by bicycle.
Accommodation in Amanohashidate
Amanohashidate is a famous tourist destination, so there are many hotels there, including the Marriott.
My personal recommendation is Hashidate Bay Hotel. You can see Amanohashidate from the rooms, the meals are delicious, and the service is excellent.
If you want to enjoy a meal, we recommend staying in Miyazu
Next to Amanohashidate Station is Miyazu Station in the city center. If you want to enjoy seafood from the Sea of Japan, I recommend staying there and having dinner at a restaurant. My personal recommendation is Tondaya.
Day4 Amanohashidate to Ine (20km) and return to Kyoto
Overview ~the most beautiful sea
Welcome to Ine, where I live! This is the best spot I can recommend.
The reason I moved here is because, although I've seen a lot all over Japan, I fell in love with the sea the most.
Ine is a 5km bay lined with 230 unique boathouses and can be reached by bicycle in just over an hour from Amanohashidate.
Return bikes in Ine
You can return the e-bike at the Ine Tourist Information Center or at our bicycle parking space.
Of course, you can also return it at Amanohashidate.
There is a bus from Ine to Amanohashidate once an hour.
Amanohashidate to Kyoto
There are express and highway buses from Amanohashidate to Kyoto or Osaka. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
Price & Service
There are two main ways to enjoy this tour. You can choose a self-guided plan with one-way rental, or a full plan which includes a support car and accommodation arrangements.
The self-guided plan costs around 22,000 yen(≒140$) per person as of 2025, including 4-day e-bike rental, one-way return, and emergency response along the way.
The full-guided plan is a closed price in partnership with a travel agency.
Reliable troubleshooting
We provide the kind of detailed support that only a local bicycle tour company can provide.
We are available 24 hours a day via chat on WhatsApp, Line, etc.
If you have a flat tire or mechanical trouble, we will introduce you to a nearby bicycle shop or rush to your aid.
In the event of sudden bad weather, you can leave the bike along the way and take a taxi or train home. If our support vehicle is available, we can also transport you.
No matter what happens, we guarantee you the best trip.
